‘Unsinkable' Molly Brown Was Larger Than Life. A New Ballet Tries To Capture Her Spirit



The Molly Brown House Museum offers histories of Denver (+ Colorado), the unsinkable” Titanic, and an inspirational local and national political leader. While the bulk of the richly appointed, golden-hued main floor remains the same, a completely new room beckons after Historic Denver breached a wall to restore a previously unknown study for J.J. Brown, who worked there at his wooden desk overseeing his empire of mines across Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Cuba and Mexico.

Margaret became a founding member of the Denver Woman's Club, part of a network of clubs which advocated literacy, education, suffrage, and human rights in Colorado and throughout the United States.

Debbie Reynolds was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Molly Brown in the film version of The Unsinkable Molly Brown. It's a focused look at Brown and her ascension from modest beginnings before her mining husband struck it big in Leadville in the 1890s and then moved into the turn-of-the-century mansion.

When the marriage ended, Molly Brown spent less and less time in Denver and decided to rent out their house to various families for many years until the Great Depression, when she Colorado was forced to turn the house into a boarding facility. Molly Brown (1867-1932) was born Margaret Molly” Tobin in Hannibal, MO. Two of her five siblings had gone to Colorado to seek their fortunes in mining.

Margaret Tobin was born in Hannibal, Missouri, one of six children of Irish immigrants. A few years later, the mansion was sold and had many owners until it was converted into a museum in the 1960s as a result of the effort of Historic Denver Inc., which saved it from demolition.
